OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES

1. Entry: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. You must be at least 18 years of age as of August 17, 2007, to enter this contest.

To enter, Send an email to notthatyouasked@gmail.com, as follows: (a) in the body of the e-mail, list your contact information consisting of full legal name, mailing address, valid e-mail address, and date of birth. (b) Below your contact information insert a link to your original rant, which must be written in the English language and may not exceed 500 words in length. Entries must be received between July 13, 2007 12:00 A.M. EDT. and August 17, 2007 11:59 P.M. EDT. One entry per person. Only entries submitted by email in accordance with these rules will be eligible for consideration. Entries received from persons residing in geographic areas in which entry is not permissible will be disqualified. Entries will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address from which the entry is transmitted to Random House. “Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. Contest is open to all legal residents of the continental United States over the age of eighteen as of August 17, 2007, except employees of Random House, Inc. (“Random House” or “Sponsor”), Sponsor’s parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, their advertising and promotional agencies, and the immediate family members of such employees and individuals living in their homes.

2. OWNERSHIP:

All entries will, upon submission, become the property of Random House, Inc.

3. PRIZE(s):

One Grand Prize Winner will receive: A signed copy of (NOT THAT YOU ASKED) and a CD including excerpts of the book read by Steve Almond (approximate retail value: $100.00). One Second Place Winner will receive a signed copy of (NOT THAT YOU ASKED) (approximate retail value $65.00). One Third Place Winner will receive a CD including excerpts of the book read by Steve Almond (approximate retail value $35.00). No transfer, substitution or cash alternative permitted, except that Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value should the prizes described above become unavailable for any reason. All expenses and all federal, state and local taxes are winners’ sole responsibility.

4. SELECTION OF WINNERS:

One grand prize winner, one second prize winner, and one third prize winner will be chosen by editorial staff of the Random House Publishing Group from all eligible entries received within the deadline. Selection of winners will be conducted on or about September 7, 2007, and winners will be notified by e-mail not later than September 21, 2007. Prizes will be awarded on the basis of originality, style, and creativity. The decisions of the judges in all matters concerning the contest will be final. All winners may be required to sign and return affidavit(s) of eligibility and release of liability, and assignments of copyright in the text of the winning entries, within 14 days following notification. Any noncompliance with the 14-day time period, or the return of any notification as undeliverable, will result in disqualification and Sponsor may at its discretion select an alternate winner from remaining eligible entries. In the event of any other noncompliance with rules and conditions, prize may be awarded to an alternate winner.

5. LIMITATIONS ON LIABILITY:

No liability is assumed for lost, late, incomplete, inaccurate or misdirected e-mail, for technical, hardware or software failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connection, or failed, incomplete, garbled, corrupted, or delayed computer transmission or any human error which may occur in the receipt or processing of the entries in this contest. Quad Network, Random House, Inc. and their respective parents, affiliates and subsidiaries are not responsible for errors in printing or electronic presentation of the Contest. If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by a computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the sponsors which negatively affect the administration, secrecy, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the contest, Quad Network and Random House reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the contest. In the event the contest must be terminated, a notice will be posted on the website.

6. REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES:

By participating, each entrant represents and warrants that the rant that constitutes the entrant’s submission is the entrant’s own original material, that it does not contain any unlawful matter or any material unlawfully obtained, that it is not libelous and does not invade any right of privacy or infringe upon any trademark, right of publicity, or any other right of any person or entity.

7. RELEASE OF CLAIMS:

Sponsor will have no liability whatsoever for, and will be held harmless by participants and winners against, any liability arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from participation in this contest and acceptance or use of any prize.

8. USE OF ENTRIES AND MATERIALS BY RANDOM HOUSE:

By entering the Contest, each entrant acknowledges and agrees that the name, likeness, and biographical data of each of the winner’s may be used for publicity and promotional purposes on behalf of Random House, Inc., and each entrant further acknowledges and agrees that winning entries may be published by Random House, Inc. in any form or format, including on web sites and in print, at Random House’s sole discretion, without further approval by or compensation to the winners(except where prohibited by law).

9. MISCELLANEOUS:

For the names of winners, available after October 1, 2007, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Random House, Inc., Attn: Random House Publishing Group Marketing Department, 1745 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. Residents of VT and WA may omit postage on return envelope. Contest is subject to all federal, state, and local laws and regulations; void where prohibited or restricted by law.
